Smart Money Concepts (SMC): A Beginner’s Guide to Market Structure
What Is Smart Money Concepts (SMC)?
Smart Money Concepts is a technical analysis approach that focuses on market structure, liquidity pools, order blocks, and supply/demand imbalances. SMC is not a magic crystal ball—it is a logical framework for interpreting price behaviour.
The Foundations of SMC
Market Structure: Uptrends consist of Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL). Downtrends consist of Lower Lows (LL) and Lower Highs (LH). Break of Structure (BOS): Occurs when price decisively breaks a significant swing high or low in the direction of the existing trend. Change of Character (CHoCH): Signals an early shift in market behaviour when price violates the structure that sustained the previous trend. Liquidity & Liquidity Sweeps: Areas where stop orders congregate (equal highs, equal lows, obvious swing points). Price frequently sweeps these zones before initiating substantial moves. Order Blocks & Fair Value Gaps (FVG): Order blocks represent institutional foot-prints prior to aggressive expansion. FVGs represent imbalances where rapid movement left unmitigated volume.Common SMC Mistakes to Avoid
- Marking Too Many Zones: If your chart has 15 order blocks, you have no clear plan. Only mark dominant higher-timeframe areas.
- Treating Every Sweep as a Reversal: Liquidity sweeps can happen during strong trend continuations. Always wait for lower-timeframe confirmation.
- Entering Without Confirmation: A zone is merely an area of interest, never an automatic market order.
