Order Blocks in Trading: What They Are and How to Identify Them

October 28, 2026

What Is an Order Block?

In Smart Money Concepts (SMC), an order block is defined as the last opposing candle or consolidation zone before an aggressive, impulsive displacement move that breaks market structure.

  • Bullish Order Block: The final down-candle prior to a sharp upward expansion that causes a Break of Structure (BOS).
  • Bearish Order Block: The final up-candle prior to a violent downward displacement that breaks support.

How to Identify High-Probability Order Blocks

  1. Look for an impulsive displacement candle that leaves a Fair Value Gap (FVG).
  2. Confirm that the move created a genuine Break of Structure (BOS) on the higher timeframe.
  3. Check if the move originated from a liquidity sweep (clearing previous equal highs or lows).
  4. Wait patiently for price to return (mitigate) to the order block zone.

Don’t Trade Order Blocks Blindly

One of the biggest retail errors is placing limit orders on every marked block. Price can slice straight through unconfirmed order blocks. Always wait for lower-timeframe confirmation (such as a 1m/5m CHoCH or rejection candle) before risking capital.
